Winter Weather Advisory NYC North Jersey Hudson Valley Connecticut South RT 84
Winter Weather Advisory NYC North Jersey Hudson Valley Connecticut South RT 84
Winter Storm Warning North Route 84
We begin the day with a few changes as Winter Weather Advisories have been extended to include NYC, Southern Westchester and Northeast New Jersey along with the coastal counties of Connecticut. Winter Storm Warning is now in effect in Connecticut along and north of Route 84. Winter Weather Advisories also cover virtually all of Eastern Pennsylvania except the southeast corner of the state. They extend southward into North Central Maryland as well. I have pulled my amounts lower and am lower than the National Weather Service snow forecast amounts.
JOE’S SNOW FORECAST FOR TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY 01/16-17/2018
FOR NYC LONG ISLAND HUDSON VALLEY NORTHERN NEW JERSEY
For the immediate coast we have the issue of warm air getting involved and this will create mixing and rain issues. Just inland of the coast it could go either way for awhile and then it is all snow once you get a handful of miles inland. I took my amounts down somewhat from the original snow forecast early call from 2 days ago. For Northwest New Jersey, Hudson Valley it is all snow and here amounts will be in the 3-4/4-6″ range. If the mixing line gets further north than amounts will finish on the low end of forecasts.
FOR CONNECTICUT
Amounts here will range from perhaps 1-2″ along the south coast south of Route 95 and then amounts should rise to 2 to 3 inches and gradually reach a 3-5/4-6″ range along and north of Route 84. Mixing or some rain could get into the south coastal areas and Southeast Connecticut but it should change back to snow before it ends.
FOR SOUTHERN AND COASTAL NEW JERSEY
Amounts here are lower mainly because the bulk of the precipitation will be to your north and west. Rain issues along the coast east of the Garden State Parkway with less than an inch. 1 to 2 inches elsewhere.
FOR SOUTHEASTERN & SOUTH CENTRAL PENNSYLVANIA
Amounts here will begin to rise as you head west. The issue is precipitation amounts and not mixing or rain here. It is all snow. I’m thinking about 2 inches or so in Philadelphia with amounts skewing higher to several inches across South Central Pennsylvania with a bit less in North Central Maryland.
US SATELLITE
Right now on the satellite picture we can see clouds from the Great Lakes upper air disturbance and the approaching upper air trough. We can also begin to see clouds from the coastal low that is going to develop tonight into Wednesday morning.
REGIONAL RADAR
Radars both on the regional above and on the local radars below are showing snow beginning to streak eastward though the presentation on the radar is not especially impressive at the moment. Radars should rev up later this afternoon and evening.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA

Snow will being north and west of the coast during this afternoon and evening and then along the coast later this evening and overnight. The Wednesday morning commute will be a bit of a mess especially as you head inland from the coast. All of this winds down during the day Wednesday with inland areas ending before noon and coastal areas a few hours later. Temperatures today will be in the 20s inland but reach the 30s coast and south. How high they get will be critical in some areas. Then temperatures will hold in the upper 20s to lower 30s overnight..a touch higher near the coast. It should be noted that the upper atmosphere is borderline here so a degree in either direction could change the outcome somewhat along the coast.
Weather conditions improve for Thursday and Friday with sunshine and reasonable cold temperatures in the low to mid 30s Thursday and upper 30s and lower 40s Friday. We should be in the 40s to even some lower 50s over the weekend with some sunshine forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.
