Wind Advisory New Years Day 40-50 MPH Gusts

We are dealing with rain tonight as the New Year arrives. It moved in fairly quickly during the afternoon and now we will see some moderate to occasionally heavy rain through midnight. Rainfall amounts will be on the order of about an inch to as much as an inch and a quarter in most places. If you are travelling around tonight expect wet roads and some slick spots but not due to temperatures because we are well above freezing everywhere. That at least is a plus. Temperatures this evening are on the raw side in the low to mid 40s with upper 30s in the Northwest Counties of New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. Temperatures are going to slowly rise overnight and we should be in the upper 40s to lower 50s by daybreak. The rain ends between midnight and 2am from west to east.

Radars both regionally and locally are fairly loaded with steady rains and we are seeing heavier bands of rain developing to the west. The rain is moving generally east northeastward as a warm front comes up from the south.

Once the rain does end during the early morning hours weather conditions improve and then we deal with gusty west to northwest winds that develop on New Years Day. Wind Advisories are posted for much of the area Tuesday for gusts of 40 to 50 mph at times from mid morning to mid afternoon. Temperatures will top in the mid to upper 50s by midday and then begin to ease later in the afternoon.

wind advisory

Colder air now in the Plains will move in with clearing skies Tuesday night and Wednesday morning lows will be in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Wednesday will be a nice day with sunshine but temperatures will top only in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Early Thursday morning (much like Sunday morning) a weak upper air disturbance will move through and that could produce a few scattered snow showers. Otherwise Thursday looks cloudy with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Friday will be dry with some sunshine before another low from the Southern Plains heads east and brings a chance for rain on Saturday. Happy New Year one and all!
