Potential Tropical Cyclone 6 Moving Westward Off African Coast
Tropical Storm Warnings Southern Cabo Verde Islands
The lower right hand corner of the satellite loop shows a strong low pressure system moving off the African coast near Senegal and heading toward the Cabo Verde Islands. Once it gets further offshore it is quite likely to become a tropical storm and tropical storm warnings are posted for the Southern Cabo Verde Islands. This is the first system (other than Severe Thunderstorm Beryl) to come out of the major development region or the MDR.
WIDE ATLANTIC TROPICAL SATELLITE
It appears that this system could eventually become a hurricane in the Atlantic. However it may never get much further west than half way across. At the moment weather models seem to be in agreement that a weakness in the upper ridge in the Atlantic would allow any storm to turn northward before it reaches 50 degrees west.
WESTERN ATLANTIC TROPICAL SATELLITE
In the Caribbean we have a tropical wave that is moving westward. This is the system that weather models earlier this week were developing in the Western Bahamas and then taking it into the Gulf of Mexico. Weather models have backed off from this idea but they do continue to show some evidence of a tropical wave moving into the Eastern Gulf of Mexico earlier next week. We will leave the door opening to the possibility of development. Pressures in the Gulf of Mexico will be low this weekend and next week so there could be an opportunity for a system to organize as it moves westward or west northwestward across the Gulf of Mexico.
