The steam bath has sent temperatures into the 90s and heat indices well over 100. Dew points are in the 70s so the atmosphere is saturated with lots of tropical moisture. Now the upper trough to the west is swinging eastward and the juiced up atmosphere is reacting as thunderstorms are now developing on the radar. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now posted for Eastern Pennsylvania, all of New Jersey, much of the Hudson Valley, all of Southern New England, NYC & Long Island. The watch is in effect until 10pm

We can see the radars are all beginning to rev up rather quickly responding to the strong heating and tropical forcing in the atmosphere. Rainfall rates from some of these thunderstorms will reach 1 to 2 inches an hour. Watch for clusters of thunderstorms to develop as we head into the evening hours which will enhance rainfall amounts in many areas.

Downpours and thunderstorms will continue into tonight before ending overnight. Thursday brings clouds and some breaks of sun with very humid conditions. Temperatures will be lower than today topping out in the 80s. Thunderstorms will likely develop again in the afternoon and evening. Then it is on to the heat and humidity for Friday and the super heat for the weekend. Highs on Saturday will approach or even go over 100 degrees in some places with heat indices 110 or higher. We will talk more about the heat once these thunderstorms play through.
