Hurricane Maria is finally pulling away to the northeast this evening and all tropical storm warnings have been discontinued. Maria will begin to pull away over the next two days as it heads into the Atlantic graveyard. Hurricane Lee which reached major hurricane status today to the east of Maria will get kicked out ahead of it and gradually absorbed by Maria before Maria gets absorbed by a large cyclone in the North Atlantic.
TROPICS TAKE A SHORT BREAK BUT
THE GULF OF MEXICO COULD BECOME ACTIVE NEXT WEEK
After a 4 week period that has seen 5 major hurricanes and 2 category 5 hurricanes, we are due for a break but it will be a short one. Pressures across the Gulf States and in the Northwest Caribbean will be low later next week and beyond.
Usually in situations like this we get slow developing tropical storms that produce a lot of rain so this will be watched with great interest. The development area begins to rapidly shift westward in the next few weeks as we get deeper into Autumn. Given the season we have seen so far, it appears that we may not be done with a few surprises.
