florence flooding

Watching the satellite and radar loops this afternoon the rains from Florence continue to advance northward. The eastern edge of the rain shield has moved into Western New Jersey and we are also seeing some renegade downpours breaking out ahead of it over parts of New Jersey and the Hudson Valley. The eastern part of the rain shield seems to be holding on much better on the radars then what many of the short range models have been forecasting so we will lean toward the more global models with this as far as rainfall amounts are concerned.

The low center that is Florence is moving northeastward toward Southwestern Pennsylvania. The rain shield is lined up east west and covers almost the entire state of Pennsylvania with rains extending in Maryland and Northeastern Virginia.

The track west of the Appalachians was vital to our are in order to reduce some of the heavier rains that would have resulted otherwise. When tropical systems travel east of the mountains part of the circulation usually is over the Atlantic which enhances the moisture content. This way the moisture field is a bit more limited. The heaviest rains will be north and west of the coastal areas. Some locally higher amounts are possible than what is being indicated in the forecast map below.

Downpours will continue on Tuesday until the low passes offshore of Southeastern New England. After that weather conditions should start to improve Tuesday night. Wednesday some sunshine returns with lower humidity and temperatures in the 70s. The rest of the week looks dry  with highs Thursday in the 70s and highs Friday in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Even though another cold front approaches Friday night it doesn’t appear there will be much weather with that. Then it is dry and cooler for the weekend though we have to watch how far south the front gets and if it winds up stalling.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS

Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
