Cold Shots & A Snow Burst Coming
As we end 2015 and begin 2016 we have 2 cold shots coming in over the next 4 days. First off short range outside of patchy clouds tonight there are no weather issues to worry about tonight as the Ne Year arrives. Midnight temperatures around the area will be in the 30s. No precipitation to worry about as the air is dry. Winds will be reasonably light if you happen to be doing your New Year’s celebrations outside either at Times Square in New York or some other outdoor venue. HAPPY NEW YEAR. Here is a map of the midnight temps and a map of the Friday high temps.
The first shot of cold is more of a technical nature then a real cold shot. It will trend temperatures lower for Friday and Saturday as we edge closer to normal. Highs will be in the low to mid 40s on Friday and upper 30s and lower 40s on Saturday.
Sunday the second shot of cold air will approach from the north as the polar get stream strengthens across East Central Canada and drives southward. I think Sunday we will see sunshine and arriving clouds with highs in the 40s. Then on Monday the second and more important shot of cold air comes in. Ahead of it there is a strong enough upper air disturbance that could trigger a burst of snow in some areas. Its a cheap thrill at best and the kind of thing that might whiten up the ground in spots as temperatures fall. Then temperatures that you might not have imagined just a few days ago will be moving in Monday night and Tuesday. We are talking teens to low 20s in many locations. Tuesday will be a very cold day with sunshine and highs in most places in the 20s to around or just over 30 with lower 30s as you head south. The cold shot is transient and it should start to pull out Wednesday. Temperatures will begin to moderate at this point.
Down the road in the long range the pattern looks dynamic for some sort of weather system for the January 10-12 timeframe. We will see how this plays out. Cold shots appear to be lining up in the afternoon long range models.
