Clear Cold Night Sunny Wednesday, Stormy Thursday Night Friday

The storm to the northeast in the Canadian Maritime Provinces is finally pulling away to the east. This is finally relaxing the pressure gradient over us and winds are easing. Skies are clear all around us and we should have a clear very cold night with lows by morning down in the 20s with teens in many locations away from warmer urban centers.

Wednesday is shaping up to be a really nice day with lots of sunshine, not much wind, and temperatures making it back into the 40s everywhere. The cold air that is over the Northeast is really the only place that is truly cold at the moment and that cold air is going to pull out quickly as we set up for the next storm system.

FLOOD WATCHES POSTED FOR NEW JERSEY SOUTH INTO MARYLAND & DELAWARE

The first flood watches have gone up for Thursday night into Friday night for the next storm which will be coming out of the Gulf States. The upper pattern is conducive for a lot of moisture to move up the coast. This looks like it could be a general 1 to 3 inch rain producer for the East Coast everywhere east of the Appalachians. Rain will reach Maryland and Southern Pennsylvania early Thursday afternoon and then reach NYC Thursday evening and shortly afterwards in Southern New England and Long Island. There is no cold air to speak of so it is all rain. We will get a surge of rain Thursday night into Friday morning. Then as the upper air trough swings east, temperatures will rise into the 60s in many areas. The early forecast high temperatures for Friday might not be high enough.

clear cold

All this upper air energy could also mean some thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening. In fact on Thursday  and Thursday night we could see a round of severe weather move across Florida and the Southeastern States. Along the coast a strong south wind will likely bring coastal flooding issues to New Jersey and especially Long Island’s South Shore. All of this finally moves away Friday night but while sky conditions could improve on Saturday winds will be strong westerly. If you are travelling by air anticipate delays Friday and Saturday due to these adverse weather conditions.

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day looks cold and dry but one model is still holding out for perhaps some snow Christmas day. We have more on this storm for Friday and the chances for a White Christmas in our JOESTRADAMUS long range post.
