Stormy Finish This Week, Euro Still Hangs On To White Christmas Hopes
The gusty winds and cold air today certainly make it feel like winter outside. This shot of cold air hits bottom tonight with temperatures in the 20s and teens in cold spots. Winds should ease as skies remain clear. Wednesday looks nice with sunshine and highs back into the 40s. Then the changes begin on Thursday as the next storm system gets organized in the Gulf States.
The upper air energy is coming into a full phase as the strongest part of the trough lifts up the coast. We will see a strong southerly flow ahead of all this and it is quite possible we could even see a few thunderstorms in the mix on Friday. Severe weather is possible over Florida and the Southeast US Thursday night into Friday. Heavy rains will head up the coast. This could be another 2 inch plus rain producer. The gradient will tighten up considerably with strong southerly winds developing later Thursday night into Friday afternoon. Some coastal flooding at high tide could occur along the New Jersey & especially for the Long Island South Shore.
We will see rain lasting into Friday evening before weather conditions only slowly improve on Saturday. Winds shift to the west and it will be rather windy on Saturday until this storm lifts northward into Southeastern Canada. Cold dry air follows but nothing overly cold as we head toward Christmas Eve. Other than the wind, weather conditions will be ok to travel however if you are flying to your destination or waiting for arrivals there will be rain and wind issues Friday and wind issues Saturday.
WHITE CHRISTMAS POSSIBILITIES
Every model except for the European has dry cold weather for the first half of next week from Christmas Eve right through the day after. The European holds out for a weak system which now instead of coming early Christmas Eve, is now showing it for the night of December 25th Christmas Day.
It is hard to have any confidence with the European as it flips back and forth on different days. Other models actually did show something coming in for Christmas night into the morning of the 26th but they have backed away from it today. Right now I would have to lean on the idea that nothing much of consequence happens through the first half of next week. Attention meanwhile will be front and center of the rain and wind event for Thursday night into Friday night and we will worry about Christmas Eve and Christmas Day after we get through the end of the week mess.
