Christmas Day Rain Ends Late Today Colder Dry Weekend

Merry Christmas to all on this cloudy rainy morning. The winds howled last night and we see gusts between 60 and 70 mph (though somehow i managed to sleep through it all). This morning the watches and warnings map is lit up like a Christmas tree. This includes High Wind Warnings and Advisories in New England. Eastern Pennsylvania is under numerous flood warnings where the heavy rains and snow melt brought many rivers to new heights.

Our storm system still has a ways to go yet as we have the satellite showing tons of bright white clouds from north to south. The back edge is pushing off the Carolinas but we have more work to do in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic and it may take all day for clouds to make a move eastward.

Radar continues to be busy. The western edge of the rain is now pushed to Eastern Pennsylvania but the river rises will continue today as the runoff and snow melt catch up. To the east heavy rains continue and we have a line of thunderstorms that has now moved offshore.

So this is the story for the rest of the day as the rains continue but will start to come to an end from west to east late this morning and this afternoon. Temperatures are in the 50s and 60s ahead of it but they will fall into the 30s later this afternoon. An upper trough comes through this evening and with that there could be a few scattered snow showers or even a heavier snow squall.

Tonight it turns cold and clear with lows in the upper teens to mid 20s. Saturday looks nice and sunny but cold with highs in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Then we have another clear cold night for Saturday night into Sunday morning. Lows will be in the upper teens to mid 20s. Sunday will be sunny but not as cold with highs in the mid to upper 30s.

Much of next week looks quiet with Monday’ storm system going well to our north and the next weather system bears a similarity to today’s system though not quite as fierce. It looks like we could see nothing more than a passing rain shower on Monday and then the likelihood of rain late New Years Eve into New Years Day with two cold days in between. Merry Christmas to you and enjoy the day!
