Bitter Cold Tonight Snow To Rain Super Bowl Sunday
Bitter Cold Tonight Snow To Rain Super Bowl Sunday
Overnight as cold air arrived rain changed to snow leaving a coating of snow and ice in most places. Temperatures are in the 20s and are likely to stay in the 20s all day. Winds will be gusting to 30 mph or more at times so it will feel like it is down in the low teens and single digits. At least we will see some sunshine developing today to take some of the sting out of the cold. The satellite picture shows some leftover clouds to work through but sunshine should break through as the day wears on. Then tonight with clear skies and diminishing winds, look for temperatures to drop to the single digits and lower teens.
US SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
Radar shows the cold front and precipitation with that front continuing to move to the east and offshore. Radars will be quiet right into Saturday night before the next storm system arrives on Sunday.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
Saturday we will see sunshine with late day arriving clouds. Highs should reach the upper 20s and lower 30s. This shot of cold air is coming in fast and going out fast since there really isn’t anything in the atmosphere to hold it in. Low pressure from the Midwest will move east. This low tracks to our north with a trailing cold front and secondary low that develops to the south but warmer air will move in Sunday. Temperatures will rise into the 40s. Precipitation could start briefly as snow or sleet inland and much of the area will see a quickcoating to an inch before changing to rain. In Northeast Pennsylvania to the Hudson Valley and Connecticut north of Route 84 are the areas that stand the best chance to see a coating to a few inches before a change to rain takes place.
SNOW FORECAST SUPER BOWL SUNDAY
Rain from this system should be on the order of a 1/2-3/4 inch. Dry colder air comes in on Monday so it will be another trip down in the temperature department. Another storm system and cold front arrives later Tuesday which will mean another round of snow or rain though at the moment the track of the low will be virtually on top of us. This would mean mostly rain with perhaps some snow at the start. A third system will follow this late next week. For these to be snow events we would need cold air to be more important and a flatter (weaker) profile of the weather system coming eastward. For now we will play it as another mostly rain event until we see evidence proving otherwise.
