Winter Storm Watch Thursday Night Into Friday Record Highs Possible Today

The first Winter Storm Watches are up for Thursday night into Friday with the next storm system but we still have the current one to get out of the way. Clouds are around this morning and we do have some scattered showers on the radar. We also have warm temperatures that will reach mid to upper 60s in many areas from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. Even some 70 degree readings are not out of the question and that will be enough for record highs in some places.

Clouds should start to thin out and give way to some sunshine. A cold front will pass through this afternoon and temperatures will ease back into the 50s behind it. Then skies should clear out at least for awhile tonight as it turns sharply colder. Overnight lows will be in the 20s to around 30.

Thursday we will see increasing clouds and temperatures topping out in the low to mid 30s. Then we get the next round of precipitation as low pressure moves up the west side of the Appalachians and heads toward West Virginia and Western Pennsylvania. Precipitation will break out Thursday night and it looks as if it may come in a bit faster and into a colder atmosphere at least initially.

There will likely be a band of moderate to heavy snow and sleet that won’t last long down near the coast. This could put down a quick coating to a few inches in areas just outside the winter storm watch area, and that would be mainly along and north of Route 195 in New Jersey. I’m counting on a slightly colder atmosphere to achieve this. Inland snow and sleet will last longer and accumulate more.

The National Weather Service latest snow forecast map has raised amounts across inland areas and even nudged amounts higher along the coast. Note the shaor cut off across Central New Jersey and Southeastern Pennsylvania. Then there is the question of freezing rain. Areas just inland of the coast will see temperatures having a tough time getting above freezing. This will lead to ice accretion and I would expect these amounts to also come up some. A large area of a tenth to a quarter inch is forecast.

During Friday precipitation which will be rain along the immediate coast and ice/snow inland will come to an end from west to east. Temperatures will be in the 30s. The weekend now looks cold and dry. A follow up system will be suppressed well to the south. We are looking at sunshine on Saturday and sun and clouds for Sunday. Highs will be in the 30s Saturday and into the 40s on Sunday.
