Winter Storm Warnings SW New Jersey Delaware Maryland
Winter Weather Advisory South Jersey South of Route 195/SE Pennsylvania
This morning we see that Winter Storm Warnings have been added to several counties in South Jersey while the Winter Weather Advisory remains post for areas in New jersey along and South of Route 195 and in Southeast Pennsylvania generally along and south of oute 76 which includes Philadelphia. NYC and areas north and west are out of this. A coating of snow reached parts of New Jersey up to about Route 78 and that was and is about it as far as the northern extent of the snow is concerned.
The initial shot of clouds and snow have pretty much played their way through. Dry air was a huge problem with this system and it remains very close by. Snow has cut off across Southern Pennsylvania though it continues in the South Jersey counties. There will be a second surge of snow for South Jersey southward into Delaware later today.
EASTERN SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
Now we see the second are of snow developing with low pressure taking shape along the Carolina coast. More snow is forecast for Washington DC & Baltimore from this along with Delaware and Southern New Jersey. Local radars show the snow that reached NYC is moving southeastward. Steady snow showing up from Route 195 southward on the Upton and Fort Dix Radars.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
There will be additional snows today to the south with clouds to the north. Eventually dry air will be moving southward and we should see sunshine develop today across Northern New Jersey to Southern New England. Temperatures today will just be in the upper 20s to lower 30s and only in the 20s to the south where it is overcast or where snow is falling. The map below shows additional snowfall forecast for today into tonight.
The week ahead starts quiet enough with some sunshine Monday into Wednesday with the occasional rounds of patchy clouds. Temperatures this week will be cold until another cold front passes through on Wednesday. Another shot of cold air comes in for Wednesday night and Thursday. Then it looks like we have a weak system coming through with a little snow/sleet for Thursday night into Friday morning as we set up for what could be an interesting weekend.
Lots of cold air and a very strong upper air disturbance will set up a developing storm coming out of the Southern Plains and heading for the East Coast. There is enough blocking so that while initially this will start as rain, we will see cold air come in (and likely come in faster than modeled. This means rain to ice to snow is likely and there will be substantial snows for somebody from the Ohio Valley to the Northeast. This is where our energy will be focused in the coming week.
