Very Warm Today Friday Severe Weather Risk Late Saturday As Cold Front Arrives

The flow across the Eastern US today turns more south and southwest as the lest vestiges of the onshore flow disappears. I’m expecting partly sunny skies to develop and some areas should be able to go mostly sunny at some point today. As for temperatures, they haven’t been going down much a night and they are warm relative to the time of year. This sets up a solid launching pad for highs this afternoon and we should see temperatures reach the mid 70s to around 80 degrees in most places. There are no radar issues and we actually should see quiet radars through the first half of Saturday.

The next cold front is still two days away so look for some low clouds and patchy fog tonight. Lows will be in the mid 50s to lower 60s. Friday will be very warm with sunshine taking highs to the upper 70s and lower 80s and some areas from Southern New Jersey south and west could see a few places reach slightly above that range.

Saturday finally sees the first important cold front in nearly 2 weeks approach. Most of the dayside Saturday should be fine. It will be no worse than partly sunny. Winds will pick up from the south. Highs will be in the 70s to near 80 degrees. We will see showers and thunderstorms approach during the evening hours from west to east and the Storm Prediction Center has much of the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states at a marginal risk for severe weather. I think the risk will be centered on strong gusty winds as thunderstorms pass.

This cold front marks the beginning of a change in the weather pattern and the switch will be flipped for Autumn weather and below average temperatures going forward. Sunday will see a mix of clouds and some sun along with the chance for a passing instability sprinkle or shower inland. Highs will be in the 60s. The core of this cool air will settle in Sunday night and Monday and this will take lows down to the 40s Monday morning. Only the warmer urban centers will stay closer to 50.

Next week will be on the cool side to start and the warm up a bit midweek until the next cold front arrives late in the week. The upper pattern takes on a blocky signature going forward and Canada will be opening up for cool air masses to move in. As usually happens around here seasons hang around longer than invited until someone flips a switch and then it goes away.
