SATELLITE LOOP
Maria has weakened to a Tropical Storm today with top winds of 70 mph. It continues to move northward and the latest satellite loop shows an eastward component of motion beginning. As far as the rain is concerned it has been minimal along the coast and inland as we have seen weak bands of rain moving westward. We don’t expect too much of an increase here in the rain area as the main activity with Tropical Storm Maria remains offshore.
Winds along the immediate coast of the Outer Banks have been gusting to 40 mph at times. Seas just offshore have been reported as high as 18 feet by some buoys. It is going to take another day for Maria to complete its turn to the northeast and then it will accelerate east northeastward from there and taking tiny Hurricane Lee out with it. This small hurricane is strengthening and will likely become a major hurricane it moves in tandem with Maria into the open waters of the Atlantic.
