Subtropical Storm Formation Remains Possible

A storm off the South Atlantic Coast is producing winds of up to 65 mph this afternoon and the satellite loop above shows a well defined center of circulation. The system at this point remains basically cold core however it will be over marginally warm water especially once the storm gets into the Central Atlantic Ocean in the next few days. The National Hurricane Center has put out a rare tropical disturbance statement indicating that conditions may become favorable for subtropical storm formation once it reaches the waters east of Bermuda. They rate the possibility at 30 percent over the next 5 days. Given the warm waters that exist in the South Atlantic that continue to run several degrees above normal, it would not be a surprise to see subtropical storm formation. We may get the first name of the season out of the way and this would be the first January tropical storm since 1978. Here is a link to the National Hurricane Center for complete information.
