Strong Cold Front Heavy Downpours Tonight Chilly Windy Weekend & Next Week

The satellite picture tonight depicts the signature of a strong cold front approaching the coast. We have a dying low in the Midwest and a new low developing on the triple point of the warm front, cold front, and occluded front which is where a new low forms. This is where we will see maximum lift and dynamics tonight to produce some heavy downpours of rain.

The two regional radars are showing the approaching action as the front nears especially the Mid Atlantic regional radar as heavy rains over Maryland and Northern Virginia are lifting northward and expanding in coverage and strength.

Look for showery rains to become heavy at times especially after midnight and especially from NYC east into Southern New England and Long Island. The NAM model is even showing some convection developing ahead of the cold front that will impact areas east of NYC.

The weekend will bring snow on the back side of the low in upstate NY and New England as well as lake effect snows in Western NY and Western Pennsylvania southward into the Central Appalachians. Winter Storm Warnings are up for parts of Northern NY and Northern New England. Winter Weather Advisories are up for parts of the Catskills where some areas could see several to as much as 6 inches in some of the higher elevations.
The lake effect is likely to last on and off through Tuesday as another upper trough swings through. This trough weakens thanks to the lead low which doesn’t get out of the way in time.  Then we can watch as a southern system comes out late this week only to get squashed in the Southeast US. The trend will be from chilly to cold to colder but it will also be dry until the block relaxes enough to allow for some room along the East Coast.
