Colder & Possibly Wetter Than Normal
I though I would just show you the upper air flow at random periods over the next 2 weeks. What is clear is that we are going to be under the influence of strong blocking for the next 2 weeks which takes us almost into mid May! Winter weather lovers must be seething at this point. This pattern during the winter would probably lead to much colder than normal temperatures along with snowstorm threat after snow storm threat!

Where does this take us going forward? Well for one thing we will probably see below average temperatures (for the most part) with the odd warm day here and there over the next 2 1/2 weeks. Also we will see opportunities for rain. In fact depending on how the troughs line it it could be a very grey damp couple of weeks ahead. What is clear when you look at these upper air maps. Where you see the yellow and orange is warm air aloft or high pressure and it basically dominates the areas around the Arctic region to Greenland. Where you see the blue is colder than normal temperatures aloft or low pressure and that has shifted southward into the middle latitudes. This is how cold air gets displaced southward. With the block in place it will be hard for temperatures to warm up substantially during this period. It is going to be a fun next couple of weeks.
