Snow Whitening Ground This Morning In A Few Places

Winter Storm Watch Continues Northeast Pennsylvania, NW New Jersey, Hudson Valley & Northwest Connecticut

Unrelated to tomorrow’s weather system is a weak system that moved out of the Ohio Valley last night. There we saw a swath of 3 to 6 inch snows but that area has since fallen apart and what is left is moving through this morning as clouds and some snow showers that are whitening the ground up in spots making for some slickness here and there so be cautious in your travels. This is completely separate from tomorrow’s weather system. Clouds should break for some sunshine later today with temperatures back into the 30s.

The satellite picture and the radar show the snow area moving through to the east. This should all be done by midday.

Tonight clouds will increase and we will look ahead to snow developing from south to north Wednesday morning from Pennsylvania to Southern New England. It will quickly change over to rain along coastal areas from Long Island to Central New Jersey. Some places along the coast may be all rain from the get go. Inland however the issue will be temperatures which may have a tough time moving above 32. The biggest risk for ice I believe will be along and north of Route 78 in New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania. The snow will only last for a few hours and the bulk of any snow will be down by 1pm

This is the NAM snow forecast through 1pm Wednesday. I’m thinking at this point that the warmer model runs suggest that snow will be less than forecast but i want to be cautious since models over warmed inland areas over the weekend and this time around with a colder atmosphere, inland areas may wind up holding on to colder air a bit longer.

JOE’S SNOW FORECAST MAP FOR WEDNESDAY

Snow Forecast Wednesday 02072018

The map above was my snow forecast map from yesterday and it still holds. I think that I would lean more toward the low end on these numbers except in Northeastern Pennsylvania and the Catskills where I think the forecast for 6 inches or more is a fair one at this point. All of this ends rather quickly tomorrow evening from west to east. Weather conditions improve for Thursday with some sunshine and highs in the 30s. Then we do it all over again Friday and Saturday with a lead weakening system on Friday…much like today’s..followed by another system over the weekend though right now it appears that the bulk of this could slide to the south.

Winter Storm Watch continues for Wednesday for a large portion of the Northeast. National Weather Service snow and ice forecast maps are updated and they can be found here with additional analysis.
