Snow North Carolina Southern Virginia Storm System Passes Well South of the Northeast
Sometimes storms off the North Carolina coast move northward and brings our area heavy snow and sometimes they don’t. This is one of those times where it won’t. In fact there probably won’t be much snow north of Richmond in Virginia. Southeast Virginia and North Carolina seem to be the focal point here where we have Winter Storm Watches up for Southeast Virginia and North Carolina and Winter Weather Advisories everywhere else west to just over the Tennessee state line.
There is the final call map for snow lovers to salivate over. For anyone who has driven west to east across North Carolina as I have, you will agree with me that it is a rather long state! Snow starts in the west around 10am but doesn’t start in the Northeastern part of the state until late afternoon Thursday. This means that the bulk of the snow in Northeastern North Carolina will fall Thursday night and likely to stick everywhere. This is why I went more aggressive here. In the west there is elevation which helps. That leaves the middle with less since what falls during the day may have a tough time sticking. Also there is the issue of rain at the start that might hold amounts back a bit.
No major changes with the weather models this afternoon. The NAM and some other short term models remain aggressive but I pulled the numbers back a bit and will let the radar and observations tell me what to do from here on.

In the meantime we have enjoyed a rather lovely day of sunshine and a bit of a gusty breeze with temperatures in the 40s to around 50. Now it is on to colder air coming down from Canada for the next few days with no issues other than maybe some high clouds on Thursday from the Carolina system.
Under clear skies tonight lows will be in the 20s with some teens in cold spots. Thursday will be day of sunshine and high clouds with highs in the low to mid 30s followed by another cold night Thursday night. Friday morning lows will be in the teens to near 20. The storm to the south passes well offshore Friday as high pressure moves overhead. Sunshine Friday will take highs again only to the low and mid 30s. Then we warm up over the weekend with some sunshine for both days.
Saturday;s highs will be in the mid to upper 40s. Sunday we should see highs jump up into the 50s in most places. There is nothing to hold cold air in so it goes out almost as fast as it comes in!
We may be able to stretch the rain free weather through Monday daytime with arriving clouds and highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s. It appears that we have a cold front and low pressure that will bring some rain or showers here on Tuesday. This is going to be another front that stalls with another wave developing on it. That could bring more rain or possibly snow later next week.
