Snow Forecast Tuesday 01312017
We have a second clipper system to deal with on Tuesday. The fact that these two systems area barely a day part prevents either system from becoming anything too important. The second is a little different in that the surface low will be going by to our north with a trailing warm front to our south. Sometimes you can get a good burst of snow with something like this which leaves anything from a coating to a couple of inches in some places and this is the way we are going to play it at this point.
Being that this warm front does not have a true tropical feed from the south does tend to limit the amount of snowfall. Also this is a bit tricky for Long Island and immediate Coastal Connecticut because if a south wind sets up, the relatively warm ocean will warm it up to 40 degrees in a hurry, though the temperatures aloft will still be rather cold. A lot will depend on whether any kind of wave can develop on the warm front and pinch the cold air in at the bottom of the atmosphere. That remains a huge variable. The snow forecast is in reverse to the clipper for Monday morning. Snow from clipper number 2 will be north of 195 and the heavier amounts of 2 or maybe locally 3 inches will occur north of Route 80 in New Jersey and Northeastern Pennsylvania, north of 287 in the Hudson Valley and north of Route 15 in Connecticut. To repeat this looks to be a minor event at the moment and should not escalate into something bigger.
You can see how the NAM handles this and the GFS model is not that different. This will happen fast from late morning to early evening Tuesday from west to east. Its a quick burst and then it moves out almost as fast as it moves in. Weather conditions will improve for Wednesday with some sunshine returning and seasonal temperatures.
