Severe Weather Risks Today Most of the Holiday Weekend Looks Good

Hot Weather Next Week

Here we are at a Friday and we are going to be dealing with tropical air moving up the East Coast ahead of a cold front and upper air trough moving in from the west. Clouds are going to break up to provide daytime heating and this will lead to thunderstorms later today. The Storm Prediction Center has a slight risk of severe weather mapped out for most of Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey south to Virginia and Maryland.

Tropical air surging up the East Coast is sending dew points surging to the upper 60s so we have a very juiced up atmosphere. Add wind shear developing ahead of the upper trough and you have the ingredients for strong winds and potential for rotation and tornadoes. A 2 to 5 percent risk is being indictad which for this area you don’t see too often. To put the risk into context, the percentage risk is the chance for a tornado withi 25 miles of any point in that area.

We are already seeing severe weather going on in Virginia as the showers and thunderstorms move north northeast but we aren’t going to see much here until later this afternoon and evening. So until then it will be warm and very humid with breaks of sun through the clouds. Highs will reach up into the 80s.

Once the front and storms pass we are on our way to Saturday. This is the one day where we have a minor issue. The cold front is moving through tonight but the upper trough is lagging behind. That passes through around midday to early afternoon Saturday. With that we could see a scattered shower or thunderstorm. Otherwise it will be a mix of clouds and sun with highs in the 70s. I think the best chances of any showers Saturday will be inland of the coast.

Once this is done the rest of the weekend looks good. Sunday look for Sunshine with highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s. Monday Memorial Day will be a sunny and very warm day with highs in the mid to upper 80s. There could be a few 90 degree highs popping up inland.

Starting Tuesday and lasting through Thursday we have three hot days of highs into the low and middle 90s with sunshine each day. Later Thursday brings the next cold front  to shut the heat off. That will be the next chance for any showers or thunderstorms.
