Severe Weather Risks New Jersey, Pennsylvania,

Hudson Valley to NYC & Western Long Island

We have arrived at Thursday and the last day of the month of March. We are going to see temperatures move higher today ahead of a cold front which stands out on the satellite view. Clouds are running north to south from Southeastern Canada and up and down the East Coast. This puts the area at risk for severe weather. The highest risk is inland and west of coastal areas. This also comes with a 2& tornado risk.

Ahead of the front it will be cloudy though the sun might poke through in some places. An increasing south to southwest wind will push the warm front into New England and most highs will reach the upper 60s to around or just over 70 in some places.

WEATHER RADAR

We will be watching the radars during the day which are showing showery rains at the moment to the west. While there could be a few showers into the afternoon the main line of thunderstorms will come sometime late this afternoon and during the evening hours. Notice on the HRRR loop that most of the cells are moving northeast while the line is moving eastward. The loop runs from 11am until midnight.

The main threat will be strong wind gusts to 50 mph or more as the cells look to move rapidly northeastward underneath strong jet streaks in the upper atmosphere. Some of those strong winds will mix down to the surface. Rain will be briefly heavy but it should not be a big issue due to the rapid movement of storms. Once they are done the cold front passes and weather improves during the early morning hours. Lows will be in the 40s to near 50.

Friday will be a day of changeable skies as an upper trough will be moving through. There could be some scattered showers around Friday afternoon. Highs will be in the 50s and then we head down to the upper 20s to middle 30s Saturday morning. Saturday will be the better of the two weekend days with sunshine and some clouds. Highs will be in the low to mid 50s which is about where we should be for this time of year. We have a weak low that will me moving through early Sunday morning with clouds and a few scattered showers but I think we could see improvement from west to east Sunday afternoon and see decreasing clouds with increasing sun. Highs Sunday again will be in the 50s.
