Severe Weather Risk Today Some Wet Snow Wednesday
Major Storm Strong Winds Saturday
We have an interesting week ahead of weather that brings the volatility of March front and center. It begins today with an approaching cold front and warm air pushing up the East Coast. This opens up the risk for severe weather inland and the Storm Prediction Center has a marginal to slight risk of severe weather mainly from New Jersey and Pennsylvania south and west into Maryland, Delaware, and Virginia. We are seeing a warm sector setting up over this area and when the cold front approaches later this afternoon and evening we will see showers and thunderstorms.

In the meantime we will see some sunshine warming things up today especially in the risk zone. Highs will reach the middle to even the upper 70s in that area but notice on the high temperature map that temperatures just north and east of NYC really struggle today with highs in the 50s. They are to the northeast of the warm front and are also dealing with a south wind from off the ocean which is a thunderstorm killer.
It appears that thunderstorms will hold off until after sunset as the NAM model loop shows. The loop runs from 4pm through 1am Thursday and it shows a solid line of thunderstorms moving through. Those storms weaken once they exit New Jersey though there could still be a few thunderstorms that don’t rise up to the severe category.
Weather conditions will improve on Tuesday but it will be significantly colder than today in places that reach the 70s, they will be 30 degrees colder while the change north and east of NYC is far less dramatic. Highs will be just in the 40s with sunshine. Then we deal with a weather system coming up from the south Wednesday.
Colder air is draining southward from Eastern Canada and New England as low pressure moves northeast and passes to our south. Temperatures are not favorable for accumulating snows and since much of this would fall during the day, for now I would say that this will not pose a problem. Areas of higher elevation however above 1000 ft probably have a shot of seeing a few inches out of this. We will evaluate those possibilities later today.
After another wave goes by to our south during Thursday we start to prime the atmosphere for a major storm later Friday night and Saturday. A windswept rain develops and whether it changes to snow or not at the end isn’t all that important. What is important is that this is going to be a widespread strong wind event in the East and I think that if this verifies we will be seeing a lot of wind advisories and high wind warnings going up for this. This will be followed by a quick shot of very cold air to finish the weekend. It is definitely a busy weather week ahead.
