Severe Thunderstorms Possible This Evening

Wind Advisory Coastal NJ Long Island Southern Connecticut

A strong cold front is making its final approach and we have severe weather risks this evening as the front passes. Wind Advisories remain in effect for the coastal counties of New Jersey as well as Long Island and Southern Connecticut where winds will gust to 50 mph or more from the south ahead of the frontal passage.  The satellite picture shows the clouds from the front overhead and the brighter clouds tops over the western half of Pennsylvania showcase a line of developing thunderstorms.

Lead showers in Northeastern Pennsylvania are moving northeast but keep an eye on the area to the west as two lines seem to be merging together. That line will arrive probably after 6pm in Eastern Pennsylvania, reaching the Catskills and Western New Jersey around 7 and shortly afterwards in the Hudson Valley, Eastern New Jersey, NYC, Long Island and Southern Connecticut.

The short range NAM 3KM model which is usually quite good in situations like this show a very narrow intense line of thunderstorms moving quickly from west to east during the evening hours.

Once the front passes winds will shift from south to west and then west northwest and the winds will be cranking overnight and gusty winds will continue from Monday right into Wednesday.

This is a stair step decline temperature wise because we have another cold front arriving Tuesday with the coldest air of this pattern coming in behind it. Monday look for a mix of sun and clouds, a gusty wind, and highs will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Tuesday’s cold front could trigger off some rain and snow showers. Gusty winds will continue and we could see a few scattered rain or snow showers. Temperatures Tuesday will be just in lower 40s in many locations.

We are still on course for very cold temperatures Wednesday morning with lows in the 20s to near 30. Wednesday will be windy and cold with sunshine with highs just in the 30s to near 40 in most places.

Another cold night follows Wednesday night into Thursday with lows again in the 20s to near 30. Thursday we will have lots of sunshine and finally winds will be lower with highs in the 40s. A warmup should follow into next weekend.
