Wind Advisory Coastal New Jersey to Southern New England Severe Weather Risk
A sharp cold front is headed our way for later this afternoon and evening so until then we will just see any sunshine giving way to arriving clouds. There are two issues today. First off is the cold front itself and the strong southerly flow ahead of it. That has put us in a zone for severe weather risk from the Storm Prediction Center.
The second issue will be the tightening of the pressure gradient along coastal locations and we have Wind Advisories up for Coastal New Jersey, Southern New England and Long Island for southerly winds that will pick up ahead of the front this afternoon and gusts to 50 mph are not out of the question.
The set up for today’s weather is already underway on the satellite and regional radar as a warm front is setting up across Upstate NY and Central New England. Showers are moving northeast ahead of the warm front in upstate NY. Later today we will see an increasing area of showers and thunderstorms develop across Pennsylvania and they will head east to reach the coast this evening.

Local radars are beginning to pick up some echoes aloft but we don’t expect much if anything rain wise at least into early afternoon unless an isolated shower goes by ahead of the main cold front.

The timing of this cold front has slowed and that gives much of the area dry weather conditions into the mid afternoon. The first area to go deal with this will be Central and Eastern Pennsylvania mid to late afternoon, Western New Jersey into the Catskills late afternoon and early evening and probably after 7pm along the coast.
All models are showing an impressive line of thunderstorms moving through and given the strength of upper trough, the marginal risk for severe weather is justified. Once the front passes winds will shift from south to west and then west northwest and the winds will be cranking overnight and gusty winds will continue from Monday right into Wednesday.
This is a stair step decline temperature wise because we have another cold front arriving Tuesday with the coldest air of this pattern coming in behind it. Monday look for a mix of sun and clouds, a gusty wind, and highs will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s. Tuesday’s cold front could trigger off some rain and snow showers. Gusty winds will continue and we could see a few scattered rain or snow showers. Temperatures Tuesday will be just in lower 40s in many locations.
We are still on course for very cold temperatures Wednesday morning with lows in the 20s to near 30. Wednesday will be windy and cold with sunshine with highs just in the 30s to near 40 in most places.
Another cold night follows Wednesday night into Thursday with lows again in the 20s to near 30. Thursday we will have lots of sunshine and finally winds will be lower with highs in the 40s. A warmup should follow into next weekend.
