Severe Thunderstorm Watch SE Pennsylvania Southward Risk Expanded Eastward

The Storm Prediction Center has expanded the risk of severe weather for the rest of this afternoon and this evening. This is due to the fact that thunderstorm development so far is outperforming all of the short term weather models which clearly are not seeing the dynamics in play. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been posted for Southeastern Pennsylvania southward into Maryland through this evening.

SATELLITE

The hole that has opened up between the clouds to the east with the warm front and the line of thunderstorms to the west with the cold front have created a significant area of daytime heating which is propping up these thunderstorms.

REGIONAL RADAR

storm free

Regional radar shows the line approaching as it moves across Pennsylvania rather quickly. Assuming they hold together thunderstorms will be moving into New Jersey after 3pm and then reach Philadelphia & NYC around 4pm or so. There are still some showers along the Central New Jersey coast from this morning. They should be out of the way shortly. We are also beginning to see the leading edge of the line coming into view of the local radars.

LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY

storm free

LOCAL RADAR PHILADELPHIA
storm free

Thunderstorms will produce strong gusty winds and heavy rains as they move through. Some individual cells could become severe. Along the coast the cooler marine layer has pushed a little further east increasing the probability that thunderstorms could maintain their strength as the near the coast, Western Long Island and Connecticut.
