Rain New Years Eve Ball Drop, More Model Chaos Ahead

Weather conditions this afternoon have been improving in the midst of leftover mild air, some patchy clouds and gusty winds that have developed in some places. Temperatures have reached their highs as colder air begins to bleed in from the northwest. Cloud cover is pinned north and west of the Catskills and Poconos. Skies should be clear tonight with temperatures by Sunday morning in the upper 20s and lower 30s.

The radars are quiet and there won’t be anything on them until later Monday. Sunday we will see sunshine and some passing clouds. It will be a cold day with highs in the upper 30s and lower 40s. We will be dry and clear Sunday night. Then Monday the next storm system heads our way with another round of rain. That rain will spread northward Monday afternoon and it looks like the rain will last at least through the ball drop at midnight Monday night.

This will be another 3/4 inch to 1 inch rain producer and this will cap off a record year for rain in many areas in the Northeast and Middle Atlantic States. This will put some stations over the top for record annual rainfall while others will move up the ranks in the top 10 or top 5. Tempertures Monday will be in the 40s and we could be near or over 50 when the New Year Arrives.

Tuesday we dry out and there will be some leftover mild air much like today with clouds and some sun with a gusty wind and highs that might briefly reach above 60 before it turns much colder for Wednesday and Thursday of next week. There is debate regarding whether low pressure heads out of the Gulf States and up the East Coast for Thursday and Friday. The pattern in the upper air favors this getting suppressed to the south but there are enough variables around that could turn this further north. Cold air will be waning but it could still be a factor. The weather models are so chaotic in the long range that it seems pointless to go through it all again today so we will give it a rest until Sunday.
