Somebody in the hurricane naming department should have thought OHO as a name might lead to a horrible headline! It is also amazing how tropical storms and hurricanes seem to always go around Hawaii but they seldom hit the island directly. Either shear kills them or the colder waters north of the island take their toll. This one is a little different because it is already moving northeast from the deep Pacific tropics and is taking a very unusual forecast track.
Tropical Storm Oho stands out on the visible satellite as do the Hawaiian Islands. Also you can see clouds over the western parts of the island that run northeast. There is a deep trough there and it is along this alley way that an opening exists, allowing OHO to move northeastward. As it gets further north it will begin to accelerate from there.

Tropical Storm OHO could get to hurricane strength during the next 36 hours while conditions are somewhat favorable however after that shear sets as does the colder Pacific Ocean as it gets further north. The storm is forecast to eventually transition to a post remnant low somewhere off the coast of Northern California! Thinking back I can’t seem to remember ever seeing something like this. Im sure it has probably happened before but it is a bit odd. Nonetheless this is the result of that strong el nino which has cooked the waters of the tropical Pacific.
