New Year Arrives Quietly
Over the next 3 days we see a quiet arrival to the new year. Today we see the storm in New England moving away to the northeast and we are seeing colder drier air moving into our area. The air behind this storm system is not especially cold so we will see sunshine today with a few clouds. A few snow showers will be running around as well. Temperatures will reach into the lower 40s.
Radar shows some snow showers coming off the Great Lakes. Usually the lake effect snows don’t make it here but sometimes an upper air disturbance can pick up some moisture and hold it together as it reaches the coast. I thought it was worth keeping in the forecast.
There are no issues Saturday with sunshine and arriving clouds and highs in the upper 30s to lower 40s. There might be a snow shower or rain shower overnight into New Years Day and then its sunshine and mild with highs well into the 40s to around 50. High pressure builds into New England which begins a moist flow from off the ocean. We will have to watch for the possibility for freezing rain on Monday especially inland. Low pressure then moves northeastward on Tuesday to our west which gives us a good shot for a soaking rain.
Later next week the pattern turns a bit colder and there will be the question of whether a wave, or perhaps 2 waves will develop and bring snow to us. Right now I’m not particularly impressed with all this. The flow aloft is fairly broad and it may be an issue of how far north does precipitation get. At this stage there is nothing we can do other than keep an open mind about these things and we will go from there.
