Major Spring Storm Blizzard NW Kansas
Severe Weather Central Gulf Coast
One feature is dominating the weather scene on this Sunday and that is a storm now moving through Eastern Kansas that is heading for the Western Great Lakes. Blizzard Warnings are up for Northwest Kansas this afternoon as the strong upper air feature slowly lifts north northeast. You can see the obvious swirl on the satellite loop. Severe weather is occurring across the Central Gulf coast with heavy rains and flooding continuing over the Middle Mississippi Valley.
Here at home it was a back door cold front that has dropped southward into Southern Delaware. Winds have turned to the east and temperatures are 20 degrees or more cooler than yesterday. Most areas will sit in the upper 50s and lower 60s this afternoon depending on how much sun breaks through the clouds. At least it will be dry with no rain to speak of on the radars at the moment except for an area of showers moving across northern parts of the Lower Hudson Valley into NW Connecticut.

There are no changes going foward. The back door cold front will back its way northward tonight and Monday as a warm front. There could be a few showers with that later tonight into tomorrow morning in some places. Then its clouds with some sun and a breeze from the south southwest on Monday with highs back into the 70s. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday night as the cold front moves through and then we should be dry Tuesday & Wednesday.
BLOCKING PATTERN DEVELOPS ON WEATHER MODELS CLICK TO ANIMATE
This coming week brings a major pattern change as a strong blocking high develops over Greenland. This block will displace the jet stream far to the south of normal and will bring storm systems to the east. The first one will approach on Thursday with a chilly rain developing and lasting through Friday at least. The implications of a blocking pattern this time of year are prolonged stretches of cloudy damp rainy days. Overnight weather models were especially wet and gloomy from Thursday through next weekend (including Mother’s Day)

The GFS rainfall forecast for the next week is quite impressive and yes this is a possibility IF we see storm systems taking their sweet time getting through here. Blocks in the spring slow weather systems down at times to a crawl. We will have to see whether that will indeed be the case as we move through this week. As for warm weather like yesterday, I would not look for too many (if any) days like that for the next 2 weeks or so.
