HURRICANE MICHAEL CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN CATEGORY 4 145 MPH
LANDFALL THIS AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING NEAR OR JUST EAST OF PANAMA CITY FL
Hurricane Michael continues to strengthen this morning as top winds have reached 145 mph and sits firmly in category 4 status. The hurricane could become only the third major hurricane to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle since the 1880’s. The hurricane’s rains are already onshore and extend back west to the Alabama Florida border.
Hurricane Michael is now in total view of regional and local radars and the eye is completely visible. The eye on the radar remains well defined and the presentation is excellent. The core of the hurricane will begin approaching the coast shortly.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
The storm surge here will be extensive with a large area forecast to see 9ft or more of water above ground with the track of Hurricane Michael forecast to pass very close to Panama City. Storm surge is the number one killer in hurricanes and many areas on the Florida panhandle could see record storm surges.

Once inland attention shifts to Georgia and the Carolinas where tropical storm warnings have been extended northward up the coast. Michael will weekend while inland but it will be close enough to the coast and moving fast enough where the weakening will be slow. The big threat here is heavy rains of 4 to 6 inches and flash flooding is likely given the very low threshold for flooding.
