Heavy Snow East of NYC Snow Tapering Off West

The satellite picture this morning shows the center of the latest coastal storm well offshore however the strong upper air storm over the Great Lakes stretched the northwest side of precipitation and brought it back to the coast overnight and this morning. Bands of heavy snow lie across Western Connecticut and Long Island. To the west snow is tapering off as the back edge begins to dry up somewhat. Look for the area of snow to begin edging eastward over the next several hours. Snow will end last in Long Island and Western Connecticut in the early afternoon and over the East End of Long Island and Southeastern Connecticut later in the afternoon. Snow over New Jersey should be ending before lunch time.

HRRR ADDITIONAL SNOW FORECAST

The HRRR model seems to be holding its own with this event and the map above is the forecast of additional snow so you need to add it to what is already on the ground in your area. Over New Jersey another coating to an inch or so is possible before it ends while to the east of NYC several to 6 additional inches are possible as you move from west to east.

Weather conditions will improve tonight though there will be clouds around. Temperatures by morning will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Wednesday the strong upper low over the Great Lakes will dive to the New Jersey coast and that means clouds and occasional snow showers and even a heavier snow squall can’t be ruled out. Highs will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Thursday looks ok with sun and clouds though cold with highs reaching into the 40s.

Longer range weather models are pointing to the arrival of spring next but the weather maps are thinking otherwise with a cold Canadian high building down and another storm system for the Northeast. I haven’t looked closely at that yet but will do so later today. We may not be done with winter quite yet.
