Heat Begins Today Once Clouds Depart. Very Hot Humid Weekend
Excessive Heat Warnings are up through Sunday as we head into what will likely be the hottest weather of the summer season. The satellite picture this morning shows clouds around this morning that should give way to sunshine. Nothing is there to stop temperatures from rising today unless clouds hold on for a longer period of time today. That would seem possible in areas east of NYC where temperatures could be a shade lower this afternoon. Humidity levels are high and will remain high all weekend. We don’t expect any shower or thunderstorm activity today other than the odd pop up cell that could develop briefly inland. Radars are quiet at the moment. Highs today east of New York City into Southern New England will be in the upper 80s to some lower 90s. Highs from NYC north, west and south will reach up into the low and middle 90s in most places.

During tonight there will be an upper air disturbance dropping southeastward from the Great Lakes with a weakening area of showers and thunderstorms. They should all fall apart before they reach the coast and lows tonight will be in the 70s to near 80. This sets up a solid launching pad for Saturday with sunshine. Highs will reach 95 to near 100. One of the unintended consequences of the rain for the last few days is that it has increased the soil moisture content enough so that it could knock off the top end highs by a couple of degrees and keep most hot spots under 100 degrees. This is just a technical point since 100 with high humidity vs 97 or 98 with high humidity; is there any real difference here? Hot is Hot!
Sunday brings a repeat performance of Saturday with lows Sunday morning in the 70s to around 80 or so and high temperatures Sunday afternoon once again reaching the mid 90s to near 100. Heat indices both days could reach 110 or higher. Other than isolated pop up thunderstorms there will be no rain for the entire weekend.
Monday will bring an end to this extreme heat as a slow moving cold front approaches. This will give us a good chance for widespread thunderstorm activity late in the day into Monday night. Temperatures Monday will be in the 80s to near 90 degrees and some of the thunderstorms could be strong.
While that nice high in the Plains will be pushing eastward the push will be more south than east as the front gets hung up for a short time Monday night into Tuesday. This could delay clearing of skies Tuesday at least in the morning where there could be some lingering showers in some places but dew points will be dropping Tuesday with decreasing clouds and increasing sunshine. Highs will be in the upper 70s north and west of the coast and low to mid 80s. We could have nice dry weather with reasonable humidity for much of next week.
