Freezing Line Moving South To NYC Northern New Jersey
Western Long Island, Icing Continues Inland
A couple of developments today have impacted the advance southward of the freezing line. One is the development of another wave on the front. The second is that the front has slowed down even further and this is prolonging precipitation into the first part of tonight. The radar is still showing rain extending southward into Virginia and the back edge of the precipitation is still well into Eastern Pennsylvania. So we have more work to do before the precipitation pulls out. Rather than the freezing line I’m watching the 29 degree or less area as it creeps southward. In areas where the ground is wet, it is slowing the icing of paved surfaces. Getting a few degrees under 30 will probably cause roads to slicken up.

The slowing of the front and an additional wave means we will continue to see precipitation tonight though it is a bit more blotchy on the radar than it is solid. It might be more on and off. Also there could be a little snow along parts of the coast after 10pm tonight as cold air moves in aloft. The NAM model suggests a coating to an inch or so is not impossible. Again this looks to be more for the coast of New Jersey and Long Island as well as Southeast Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey and should not be an issue inland north and northwest of NYC. The NAM loop starts at 5pm and ends at 7am Saturday.
The lingering clouds and rain probably means that temperatures will be higher and they will bottom in the teens north and west of the coast and low to mid 20s near the coast and in warmer urban locations. At least the weekend looks good though cold and we should be dry into at least the first half of next week. Look for some sunshine Saturday with highs just in the 20s. Sunday should be nice too with high pressure overhead. We will have sunshine and highs will reach the upper 20s and lower 30s after bottoming in the teens and single digits Sunday morning.
