Rainfall amounts from Florence continue to climb ever higher falling at insane rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour for hours on end in some places. The radar shows that as Florence has slowly shifted southwestward the rains have abated somewhat in Northeastern North Carolina though there are some bands of rain going on there. West and south of Morehead City North Carolnia the pounding rains continue. Bear in mind that since the storm has been inland for the last 72 hours the center has moved less than 100 miles! It is currently moving west at a whopping 2 miles per hour.

Rainfall forecasts show an additional 15 inches of rain on top of what already has fallen. As Florence eventually makes its way further inland it will eventually turn northward up the Appalachians spreading rains up along and on either side of the mountains. Areas in Western North Carolina and Western Virginia could see 6 to 10 inches of rain before it is all said and done. Note that the map above is showing rain induced by the system while it is tropical and only goes through 8am Tuesday.

Our weather by contrast is evolving into a very nice weekend for the last weekend of summer. Sunshine is cutting through the clouds rather quickly and it should be no worse than partly sunny today in most areas. Clouds could be a bit more stubborn inland at least for awhile before giving way. Temperatures will be in the 70s to near 80 this afternoon. If you are shore bound rip currents and high surf continue so exercise caution. Radars are quiet and are not an issue today or Sunday.

Sunday is going to be a mostly sunny day here with highs reaching the mid 70s along the coast to the lower 80s inland. High pressure builds in from the Northeast keeping things nice and dry. It will be moderately humid this weekend but by no means will it be oppressive with reasonable temperatures.

The jet stream pattern changes next week as the ridge controlling Florence over us breaks down and the jet stream from Canada begins to drop southward and strengthen. This will lift Florence northward and then northeastward. Remnant rains will scattered showers west of the coastline perhaps as early as late Monday afternoon. Then later Monday night and on Tuesday there will be a couple of bands of heavier downpours moving through. The European model has seemed to have backed off from a more aggressive rainfall so we are looking at perhaps an inch or 2 or so of rains on Tuesday and most of it will come in a 6-8 hour stretch in the afternoon and evening. Then as the remnant Florence moves offshore Tuesday night cooler dry air comes in for Wednesday into Thursday of next week. The weather pattern longer range looks better in that everything will be moving along as weather fronts come through every 2 or three days with fresh air masses from Canada. We could be enjoying an early taste of fall next weekend which is the first weekend of Autumn.

MANY THANKS TO TROPICAL TIDBITS FOR THE USE OF MAPS

Please note that with regards to any tropical storms or hurricanes, should a storm be threatening, please consult your local National Weather Service office or your local government officials about what action you should be taking to protect life and property.
