FLASH FLOOD WATCH SEVERE WEATHER RISK TODAY
FLASH FLOOD WATCH SEVERE WEATHER RISK TODAY
This morning we are seeing the first of 2 rounds of heavy downpours and thunderstorms as they move from west to east. The abundance of rain in areas to the west and south of NYC over the last few weeks has prompted a Flash Flood Watch to be posted this morning for most of New Jersey except the northeast and coastal counties along with a small portion of Southeastern Pennsylvania
In addition we have an increased risk of severe weather today and the Storm Prediction Center has raised the level to slight risk from marginal risk for the Lower Hudson Valley, all of New Jersey, Eastern Pennsylvania southward into Maryland, Delaware, and Northeast Virginia. This is primarily for the second round of downpours and thunderstorms likely to move through late this afternoon and this evening from west to east.
Radars show that first band of showers swinging east across NYC in Southern New England and moving eastward. Some heavy rains are occurring with this band as it moves through. There should be a break that follows until late this afternoon when a second band of thunderstorms will fire up.
With regards to the second round of storms that should occur between 4pm-10pm and the HRRR as usual is very bullish with these thunderstorms while other models typically show thunderstorms falling apart as they approach the coast. The HRRR model shows the worst case scenario this morning which would be some active thunderstorms moving through and then weather conditions improve overnight.

There are no changes in the weekend outlook and no changes in the outlook for Monday’s solar eclipse. Weather conditions over the weekend should be no worse than partly sunny both Saturday and Sunday with highs both days in the mid to upper 80s and nighttime lows in the upper 60s to lower 70s. No showers are forecast as they should stay well to the west. Monday will be mostly sunny and sky conditions remain about as good as it gets with up to 80% or more of the sky forecast to be cloud free along the coast and 70-80% inland. We will be addressing this issue specifically later today.
