Euro Model Cold Shot Next Weekend remains on track. The Euro model and for that model have varied little on this idea for the last week. Let’s take a look at what this will mean.
COLD AIR ARRIVES NEXT WEEKEND
COLDEST AIR WILL BE SUNDAY INTO TUESDAY
COLD AIR PULLS OUT RIGHT AFTERWARD
MODELS SHOW NO SIGNS OF ANY SNOW COMING WITH THIS
THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE MID WINTER COLD AT ALL
This all centers on the development of the strong vortex that is going to form in Northern Canada and drop southward to Southern Hudson Bay next weekend and the first part of next week that follows. The air in that air mass is very cold however the core of the cold air will probably remain north of our area. Still it will mean daytime highs just in the 40s and night down in the 20s to near 30 which really isn’t too big a deal. Still we are looking for temperatures to average 10 or more degrees below normal on a couple of those days. It would be my advise that if you are thinking of some early planting you should hold off until after this cold shot has played out.
Euro Model Cold Shot Next Weekend
The Euro model shows the vortex dropping down and then pulling out after Monday. This means that temperatures will moderate back to normal fairly quickly. Because the vortex is so large and broad, there is really no room for any important storm development. Nor is that anything coming along in the southern stream to open the door to even a remote possibility at this point.

The map above is the upper air by Day 10 which is Tuesday April 5th. The upper winds are already turning westerly. The upper ridge in the west is gone. The cold flow at this point is relaxing. Temperatures will moderate further as the week wears on. Again nothing here suggests anything other than a shot of cold air for a few days and then done.
Euro Model Cold Shot Next Weekend
Monday afternoon shows the departures from normal in the -10 to -15 range across the Northeast and Middle Atlantic States. Remember normal highs here close to 60 so we are talking about tempertures not out of th 40s by day. Cold yes. Manageable? Absolutely. However with nights in the 20s it would be wise to avoid spring planting until this is all done.
