Drying Out Better Sunday Snow Sleet NW Monday Night
Yesterday’s dismal day of gloom doom and rain is now over with and we look ahead to a better Sunday with some sunshine through leftover clouds, a gusty wind and temperatures in the 40s. There is colder air coming southward from Southeastern Canada today that will hold temperatures in a tight range and then we will be down in the 20s tonight and teens inland.
Monday is going to be a cold day from start to finish with sunshine giving way to arriving clouds with highs just in the low to mid 30s. We have 2 weather systems coming through early this week with a warm front coming through Monday night. More on this in a moment. First off we can see the satellite loop this morning with some cloud issues across the Northeast. The regional radar is producing some showers of rain and snow in upstate NY that gradually goes over to all snow today. It doesn’t appear that we will have any issues radar wise today.
EASTERN SATELLITE
REGIONAL RADAR
Monday night we have this approaching warm front. It seems that much of the upper air energy with this goes by to our north there may be a burst of precipitation. There could be a lead line late Monday afternoon in a narrow band that goes by to the north of the coast. Then a second area moves in during the early morning hours that extends southward from Upstate NY during the early morning hours into Tuesday.
A few spots could see a whitening of the ground or perhaps a bit more to about an inch or so. This will occur north and west of the warmer urban centers from NYC & Newark. It would appear to be west and north of 287 in New Jersey and in the Lower Hudson Valley. It could be on the order of an inch or so north and west of Route 84.
Tuesday brings a follow up system with a few showers of rain Tuesday evening which will then be followed a longer lasting round of colder temperatures. Beginning Wednesday and lasting through next weekend temperatures will be near or below average as high pressure builds across the Great Lakes and Southern Canada. The set up of the upper air remains the same. A split flow in the jet stream rules the Eastern US.
It becomes one of timing and strength of short waves moving along in the flow. The first chance for this comes next weekend as southern and northern energy will be moving along. if short waves remain apart or if the timing is off, it would likely mean a weather system moving off the Southeast US coast and passing to the south and east with no important consequence here. This pattern will continue next week so there will likely be more weather systems in the mix to deal with, though how is the big question.
