Cooler Dry Air Takes Over For The Rest of the Week, Weekend Outlook

Our cold front is pushing southward this evening and we can see the dry air and clear skies on the satellite to the northwest while the showers are now in Southeastern New England and moving eastward. We are done as far as rain is concerned and we can look forward to a dry cool weather pattern setting up in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states for the rest of the week. Skies will clear out tonight with morning lows mostly in the 50s.

The next 3 days and possibly a 4th day will be controlled by a strong northerly flow in the upper atmosphere and a trough that is off the East Coast and not going anywhere fast. That accomplishes two things. It keeps our weather dry through the end of the week and probably through Saturday. It also steers Hurricane Sam northward well offshore and other than kicking up the surf a bit, it is not a problem here.

The only issues are minor ones going forward as weak disturbances move around the upper low and they can produce occasional clouds to mix in the with sun for Wednesday and possibly into Thursday. Otherwise it will be partly to mostly sunny. Wednesday highs will be in the cooler 60s.

Thursday and Friday look like nice days with partly to mostly sunny skies with highs both days in the 60s and nighttime lows in the 40s inland and lower 50s in warmer urban locations and along the coast. We should hold on to the dry air for Saturday with sunshine taking highs to 65 to near 70 in some places.

Sunday’s weather will hinge on Hurricane Sam. If it heads into Newfoundland it will re-enforce the trough off the East Coast and that could keep us dry. If it kicks away to the northeast, the offshore trough moves east and that allows for more room for the rain to the southwest of us to move northward. The GFS has been going back and forth on this and today’s run favors a dry Sunday but we will remain in flux on Sunday. Saturday will not be an issue.
