We have a Cold Shot On Course For April 3-6 which continues to set up strongly on all the models. The Euro model has led the way on this and it is the coldest of the three major models. This lends support to the idea that we will see temperatures averaging 15 or more degrees below normal with the core of this cold air mass. What is causing this is the development of a very strong upper high along and off the Pacific Northwest coast. This building ridge forces an equal and opposite reaction on the other end of the equation. A vortex forms over northern Canada. It strengthens and drops southward towards Hudson Bay. The resulting flow shown by the black arrow means that our air is flowing directly from the Arctic region and plunges southward into the Untied States east of the Rockies over next weekend.

How we will see this occur here will be with a strong cold front that will move through here later Friday and Friday night. The cold air will probably come in 2 shots. The first shot next weekend moves in to bring temperatures down to normal. The colder shot comes later Sunday and Sunday night. It is from this “arctic” front that temperatures will fall to well below normal for the week of April 4th. As of right now we see nothing that suggests that the arrival of the very cold air will come with any sort of storm.
Cold Shot On Course For April Euro Model Monday April 4th
The polar vortex on the European is extremely strong. In fact this is about as strong a polar vortex that we have seen anytime in the last 4 months! Amazing that it comes now in early April. It was no where to be found all winter long. By the time we get to Monday April 4th you will see that the big Pacific ridge has weakened some what. This suggests the cold air might hang around a few days until that upper vortex pulls out to the east. The Euro model doesn’t go beyond day 10. The GFS model has been suggesting that there could be a second shot behind this one with a brief warm up in between cold fronts. The vortex is so overwhelming that there is really no room for any other threatening weather systems.
