Cold Relief With Blast Furnace Christmas Eve
Cold relief can come in all sorts of ways including a blast furnace for Christmas Eve. Record high temperatures are going to occur across the area this coming Thursday as advertised last week. The forecast map below for Christmas eve might be a few degrees too low!
The core of the cold air came overhead today and produced snow showers in many areas. Temperatures went no where as they held in the upper 30s to lower 40s. This was the coldest dayside we have seen since the cold blast in the middle of October. Just like that cold blast the upper trough will be lifting out and being replaced by a building ridge along the east coast. The difference this time is that the ridge is building further east so the trip to record highs will probably be for one day or possibly 2 Wednesday and Thursday depending on the warm front and whether it passes north of the area fast enough.
Satellite loop above shows the cold air coming off the warm Great Lakes which produced some lake effect snows in upstate New York today. This was the biggest snowfalls for those areas so far and for some areas upstate it was the first accumulating snow of the season. This is a far cry from last year when we saw that epic lake effect event. Those snows will be relaxing tonight and disappearing all together on Sunday.
Overnight temperatures will be cold everywhere with lows in the 20s to low 30s. Temperatures on Sunday will begin to bounce into the low and middle 40s with less wind and sunshine.
There will be cold spots in Northeast Pennsylvania and parts of upstate New York that will not get out of the 30s. The warmup there will occur on Monday. Monday’s forecast highs are shown on the map below.
There will be rain this week to deal with on Tuesday night into Wednesday as a warm front sets up ahead of the super warm air. Rainfall amounts could be a half inch to an inch which would make it the 3rd rainfall event here in the last 2 weeks. That is the most activity we have seen since last April. So not only are we getting cold relief, we are getting drought relief as well.
Christmas Day looks dry with cooler temperatures in the low to mid 50s with a mix of sun and clouds.
