Cold Night Temperatures Bounce Higher Over the Weekend
It was the coldest day of December so far for many areas in the Northeast. Temperatures today for most did not get out of the 20s but at least the strong gusty winds from last night and early this morning have eased somewhat. We had ineffective sunshine all day long and now we head into another cold night of clear skies with less wind. The satellite shows us to be nice and clear and the regional and local radars show no snow at all nearby though there is a little back of activity over Eastern Lake Erie moving into Southwestern NY state.

Most lows tonight will be in the teens to lower 20s under mainly clear skies. Cold spots north of the coast in Upstate NY and in New England will be in the single digits. Those areas are still under substantial snow and ice cover.
We will begin a slow recovery in temperatures on Friday that will take us into next week. Sunshine Friday should bring highs back into the upper 20s and lower 30s for most folks. We will be down in the teens to low 20s by Saturday morning. Then we will see sunshine on Saturday with highs reaching in the low and middle 30s.
Sunday should see a nice bounce higher in temperatures with some sunshine taking highs up into the low and middle 40s which is a nice recovery from today’s bottoms. Next week is Christmas week which brings with it would I would describe as a rather “messy” looking jet stream pattern.
The low is split over the United States but there is an active enough stream of air from Hudson Bay to Nova Scotia that will probably limit any warm up next week. Also there is really isn’t much in the way of impressive energy coming from anywhere at the moment. This leads us to conclude that Monday through Wednesday will be no worse than a mix of sun and clouds with daytime highs mostly in the 40s and nighttime lows in the 20s to lower 30s. Maybe we can make the case that on one of those days we could see highs reaching the 50s. That day would mostly likely be Tuesday Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is looking dry with some sun and clouds with highs mainly in the 40s. No big storms are on the horizon through the middle of next week at least. There might be a weak system that will drop southeast from the Great Lakes late next week and we will be looking at that possibility a bit more closely over the weekend.
