Blizzard Warning Northern Plains
Blizzard Warning Northern Plains
The storm system that will bring in the cold air and usher in the change in the long term weather pattern is moving through the Northern Plains and headed to the Westernmost Great Lakes. Blizzard Warning is posted for parts of Northeastern South Dakota and Southwestern Minnesota.
New NAM model shows snowfall amounts in excess of a foot in some areas. It is a little unusual to see the first widespread winter storm this late in the Western part of the United States but not all that unusual. An early start to the winter there could have been a signal that this was going to be a winter for the west and not the east (like last year) so that might be one way to look at it.

This storm system is going to bring in cold air into the Northeast this weekend and early next week. Temperatures are going to average 5 to 10 degrees below normal especially on Monday which I believe will be the coldest day of the stretch.
Monday morning lows will be in the 20s to low 30s and highs will only reach the upper 30s to some middle 40s. There will be many areas north and west of the coast and warmer urban centers that will not get out of the 30s for highs. Seasonally adjusted this would be like a day in January with highs just in the low to mid 20s.
The latest NAM model snowfall forecast for this weekend through Sunday Evening shows some snows in the interior areas of the Northeast but do not be surprised if we see some snow showers out of this during Sunday into Monday especially north and northwest of the coast.
Of course attention will shift after this weekend to Thanksgiving and JOESTRADAMUS will begin to offer opinions on this at some point later today.
