Bitter Cold Air Late This Week
Regardless of whether it snows or not this week, one thing that is going to happen is that it is going to turn bitter cold for Thursday and Friday. Friday morning in particular will be the coldest morning with temperatures in many areas plunging to the low teens and single digits.
Some record lows are possible Friday morning if this verifies. The GFS has been consistently telegraphing the idea of very cold air moving into the Northeast and all the other models are on the same page.
The polar vortex plunges far to the south which brings down arctic air. Also this is a case of it being so cold that there is no room for any storm to develop. One of the things we have to watch for is when the arctic air arrives Wednesday night into Thursday morning is the possibility of a burst of snow when the arctic front moves through. The other question is when the arctic air begins to pull out, whether we could be setting up for a snow or ice event over next weekend. More on this later this evening.
