Winter Weather Advisory Freezing Rain This Evening Into Tonight Chance For Snow Rain Sunday

A very Happy New Year to all and we start the New Year with a winter weather advisory up for most areas from West Virginia, across Pennsylvania and New York State, a small portion of Northwest New Jersey, the Hudson Valley except for lower Westchester, and Connecticut except for areas south of I-95.

This is going to be a minor icing event for most folks with ice accretion under a tenth of an inch. Some areas inland in Pennsylvania and Upstate NY could wind up with between a tenth to a quarter but this doesn’t look like a major icing event.

We cleared out overnight and that allowed temperatures to drop to the upper 20s and lower 30s in most places. Now we watch clouds increase as the high to the north gives way. Temperatures today will top in the low to mid 30s in most places and temperatures will hold steady inland tonight while they should rise into the upper 30s and lower 40s along the coast.

As for the precipitation it has appeared now on the Middle Atlantic regional radar loop below. We can see rain and areas of freezing rain across the Ohio Valley and that precipitation should reach Southern Pennsylvania early this afternoon and Southern New England by this evening.

Unless there is something of a surprise with regards to the temperatures we expect this to play out as advertised. It should move through rather quickly with about 6 to 8 hours worth of precipitation and then it is done by Saturday morning.

Since there isn’t much in the way of cold air behind this low, we will see clouds give way to some sunshine on Saturday with a gusty wind and highs mostly in the middle to upper 50s. It will turn colder Saturday night into Sunday morning which sets up the next low for Sunday.

With marginal cold air overhead all it would take would be a one degree change in either direction to alter the outcome. The NAM is among one of the colder models and it should mostly wet snow just inland of the coast Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening.  This is one of those situations where we are dealing with what I call do it yourself cold air. This is where the upper features manufacture cold air and deliver it to the bottom of the atmosphere via dynamic cooling. These are always tricky scenarios and they often lead to surprises both on the up and downside. The shorter range models are coming into range today so we should have a better idea about this later today. You can expect precipitation from this to continue on and off into early Monday morning before the low pulls away to the east. Weather conditions should slowly improve for the first part of next week.
