Winter Storm Warnings Continue Today Across Northeast US

Snow fell overnight and we are going to see more snow today heavy at times across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. The secondary low off in North Carolina is now strengthening and moving northward pushing moisture northward. Winter Storm Warnings continue today for much of the Northeast for heavy snow. In addition we have High Wind and Coastal Flood Warnings out for coastal areas where moderate to major coastal flooding is expected during high tides Monday into Tuesday.

In addition we have high wind issues as High Wind Warnings have been issued for coastal areas as winds will gust to 50 mph or more at times from the Northeast. Inland wind gusts will reach 30 mph or more which of course will be blowing the snow around.

As far as snow amounts are concerned it becomes a bit tricky here to figure out what is total and what is additional since we do have some backside snows to deal with tonight and Tuesday. The National Weather Service snow forecast maps is defined as total new snow so bear this in mind where numbers seem low. Those are additional snow amounts on top of what is on the ground.

As far as what to expect for today it will be snow heavy at times moving from south to north. In South Jersey the snow changes to sleet and rain and then changes back to snow tonight on the back side. Eastern Pennsylvania especially north of Route 78, Northern New Jersey across NYC and into Southern New England it will be heavy snow falling at rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour at times. For Long Island heavy snow will continue into this afternoon and change over to sleet and perhaps some rain.

My snow forecast map remains unchanged from yesterday. These show final snow totals for the entire storm including backside snow that is likely to occur later tonight into Tuesday evening. We will address those issues later today.
