Winter Storm Warning Long Island

Rain Changing to Heavy Snow Tuesday Morning

Winter Storm Warnings have now been issued for New York City and Long Island for Tuesday. Low pressure is developing in the Gulf States and the low will track northeast across Southern Virginia tonight. It will then move offshore and intensify into a major storm as it heads to the east northeast. The track south of Long Island and a slow southern shift in the forecast track of the storm has put Long Island in an area of heavier snow and as a result watches have been upgraded to warnings.

Clouds are increasing from south to north tonight and temperatures will slowly make their way down into the 30s . Rain will be advancing up the coast overnight and should move into Long Island during the early morning hours. Once the storm reforms east of the Delaware coast early Tuesday morning, cold air will collapse southward and rain will change over to heavy snow during the Tuesday morning commute.

This will be a difficult snow accumulation foreecast. Temperatures will fall close to 32 degrees while it is snowing so intensity will be the main driver here. If heavy snow develops as shown by some models we will see a general accumulation of 6 inches or more across Long Island. Lower amounts will be along the immediate south shore and higher amounts on the north shore. The main time frame for accumulating snow will be from 7am Tuesday until about 1 or 2pm when the snow tapers off and ends from west to east. It should be long gone by the evening commute. Weather conditions will improve afterwards as skies clear overnight. Winds will be strong and gusty during the day Tuesday into Tuesday night and we could see gusts over 40 mph at times especially along the coast. Coastal flooding has been an issue today and will continue to be an issue overnight into Tuesday morning. Once winds shift to the north, coastal flooding will be less of an issue as the day wears on. Improvement comes Wednesday with some sunshine returning and highs will be in the 30s in most places.
