Wildfire Smoke Returns To Join Heat & Humidity

Thunderstorm Heavy Rain Risk Returns Tuesday

Parts of the Northeast are back to dealing with air quality alerts after a couple of weeks of being out of the flow of Canada wildfire smoke. The upper flow has returned to a flow more connected to Northwest Canada so we will be seeing smoke creating a lot of haze across NY State, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and points west to the Great Lakes and south into the Mid Atlantic states.

The haze is returning to the land of heat and humidity at least for the next two days. The good news for the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states is that we have a mostly thunderstorm free day. There is the chance for a scattered shower or thunderstorm well inland in Pennsylvania south into Western Virginia but much of the I-95 corridor will not see rain today. It will be hot and humid however with hazy sunshine thanks to that wildfire smoke. Highs today will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

Tonight will be a very warm and humid night with lows in the upper 60s to mid 70s from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. We do have a cold front approaching Tuesday so ahead of it will be hot and humid with hazy sunshine. Highs will reach the upper 80s and lower 90s again.

There will be the risk for thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening but they should be less organized than what we saw Sunday. Flooding thresholds remain low which is why the Weather Prediction Center has a slight risk (15 to 40 percent) for flash flooding. Any thunderstorm could set off some localized flash flooding in local areas. We will be monitoring radars carefully Tuesday.

Wednesday we should be in a better place with sunshine (smokey haze possible). Humidity will be stubbornly high though. We should probably have a rain free day other than an isolated shower or thunderstorm. Highs Wednesday will be a little lower in the mid to upper 80s.

Thursday brings another cold front across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes and into the Northeast as low pressure passes to our north. Ahead of it look for another very warm and humid day. It seems this front has a higher chance of producing downpours and thunderstorms late in the day and Thursday night. Highs Thursday will be in the mid to upper 80s.

It seems that this front will be moving along rather than getting hung up offshore. If that is the case might be able to orchestrate a break in the downpour/thunderstorm pattern for more than just a day. We also might be able to see a bit of a break in the dew points late week and into the weekend. It could mean we may actually not have another Sunday of heavy rain to deal with and that the weekend could actually turn out to be a nice summer weekend.
