Flooding Rains Across the Northeast Numerous Widespread Flash Flooding
Severe Weather Elevated Tornado Risk
It has already been a busy night across the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic. Thunderstorms with numerous lightning strikes and very heavy has fallen from Delaware to the Hudson Valley in NY State. Numerous flash flood warnings have already been issued in New Jersey and we have also seen at least 2 tornado warnings, one in Northern New Jersey and the other in the Hudson Valley.
This is going to be going on most of today across the Northeast and into tonight in Eastern New England. Ther Storm Prediction Center indicates a marginal to slight risk for severe weather today and this also comes with an elevated tornado risk of 2 to 5 percent which may not sound high, but in fact it is elevated.
Satellite and radar loops show clouds and heavy rain moving from south to north along the coast from the Delmarva Peninsula northward into the eastern half of NY State and into Western New England. More is building up from the south as a frontal boundary remains stalled along the coast, waiting for a push from the west to get it offshore

That push will come later this afternoon and evening so until then, expect more downpours and thunderstorms to develop along with isolated severe thunderstorms. A tornado or two could spin up in this tropical air mass. The NAM model shows more rain and this is likely to trigger additional flash flood warnings.
When it is all said and done 2 to 3 inches of rain will be common place in the entire flood watch zone however this is a system that produces thunderstorms. Due to the convective nature of this system it is entirely possible that some local ares could see double those amounts or up to half a foot of rain.
Many areas have seen up to a foot of rain since last Sunday so it can not be emphasized enough that flash flooding risks are high due to the saturated ground. It won’t take much to see flooding occur even in areas that are usually not flood risks. Travel carefully and cautiously today and tonight and remember “turn around don’t drown” is very good advice.
